Cord Blood Stem Cells are hematopoietic

The majority of stem cells found in umbilical cord blood are hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). These specialized cells can produce all types of blood and immune cells throughout a person’s life, so cord blood is frequently used as an alternative to bone marrow for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. HSCs in cord blood allow it to treat various diseases affecting the blood and the immune system, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and certain genetic disorders.

Cord blood HSCs:

- Can reconstitute a patient’s blood and immune system.
- They are functionally similar to those found in bone marrow and peripheral blood.
- They are especially valued in clinical settings due to their high proliferative capacity, and cord blood transplants do not always need to be as closely matched as bone marrow transplants.

In summary, cord blood’s primary regenerative stem cells are hematopoietic, meaning they specifically form blood and immune cells.
